Nickers brought a couple of Nooma dvd's to small group the other night. Very cool stuff- challenging and inspiring (which is always good) and a good length for people with short attention spans!

The second one was really good. So many important points that I couldn't possibly share them all, you'll have to watch it for yourself.

Part of the second one challenged viewers about discipleship. The presenter gave some interesting information about Jesus calling the disciples, and how this would have fit into the culture of the day. To make it really short, he was saying that the ultimate for any young boy growing up was to be good enough to become a Rabbi's disciple. This would only happen if you demonstrated enough passion, ability and knowledge. It was a rare thing to be chosen. Most other young men ended up learning their family trade instead.

Then Jesus came along, and instead of picking the best students to be His disciples, He went up to some fisherman - guys who had already been put to work in the family trade - and said 'hey, follow me'. They didn't deserve the opportunity. They had already had their chance. It's no wonder they dropped their nets and followed Him.

Jesus knew what kind of people it would take to continue the work after He was gone, and it wasn't just the smarties. Everyday, down-to-earth fishermen and despised tax collectors were among His disciples. Why? Because they were right for the job, even if they didn't believe it yet. You know what? He's chosen you to be on that team too...
